GDOT Begins Work on I-85 Northbound This Week

Dept of TranspExpect some delays overnight on I-85 northbound in the Banks Crossing area.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announces maintenance work began last night on I-85 north of SR 15/US 411, the Banks Crossing area.

Crews are repairing or replacing the slabs or sections of concrete on the Interstate that are aging to provide a smoother riding surface between the sections, according to GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope.

“Concrete is really great because it lasts a long time and it does not have to be re-surfaced as frequently as asphalt does,” said Pope. “But we are to that time now where we need to do some maintenance work on the concrete roadway. The concrete sections are poured in slabs of roughly one lane wide and roughly 12 to 14 feet long. The edges of those slabs is cracking or sometimes the caulk between the slabs is gone.”

The right or outside lane will be closed for concrete slab maintenance.  Crews will work overnights Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as weather permits.  Overnight work is expected to last approximately 3 weeks, Pope said.

Other work going on this week, GDOT crews will be mowing the grass along SR17 in Stephens County and work to widen SR17 to a four lane also continues this week.
