Flags at Half-Staff for Former Lavonia City Councilman

Flags are flying at half staff in the City of Lavonia memory of  longtime city councilman Carl David Whitworth.

Whitworth died early Wednesday morning at his home on Bluebird Lane in Lavonia.   Whitworth served as a city councilman in Lavonia from 1972 to 1991 and again from 1993 to 2003. 

“David had been with for 29 years in two different terms in office,” said City Manager Gary Fesperman. “He served the city well and we were indeed saddened to hear of his passing.”

On Wednesday, Mayor Ralph Owens ordered flags to be lowered in Whitworth’s honor. The flags will remain at half-staff until after the funeral service Sunday.

Born and raised in Lavonia, Whitworth  was a graduate of Lavonia High School and a veteran of the US National Guard.

He was retired from General Telephone & Electronics and the Lavonia Fire Department.  After retirement, he worked with Strickland Funeral Home for many years, as well as refereeing Recreation League Ball.

Fesperman described Whitworth as a quiet man who loved his community and his town.  He said both Whitworth and his wife were heavily involved in their community.

“His wife Ruth, served the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce as their executive secretary and David had a true love of Lavonia and he tried to make things better here inside the city. He will truly be missed,” Fesperman said.

A memorial service for Whitworth will be held Sunday at 2p at First Baptist Church in Lavonia.  Visitation will be Saturday, May 25th from 2-4pm and from 6-8 pm at the Lavonia Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home.
