Elbert County BOE Sells Property for $1

The Elbert County School Board has parted ways with the Hawes Center Property.

The board planned to try and sell the property during April’s regular meeting, and in the time from then until now, only one bid was received.

That bid was from the Granite City Life Skill Foundation in the amount of one dollar.

Elbert County School Superintendent Rick Higginbotham says the foundation is planning to renovate the property.

One section of the property, on the side closest to Mill Street, has been condemned by the City of Elberton.

It was estimated by the school board that it would have cost somewhere over thirty thousand dollars to demolish that section of property.

While the property was only sold for one dollar, Board Chairman Ben Baker said that the group acquiring the property will be solely responsible for any costs concerning renovations and any demolition that would have to take place.

The board approved the sale of the Hawes Center Property to the Granite City Life Skill Foundation for a cost of one dollar with a unanimous vote.
