Click It or Ticket Seatbelt Campaign Begins Today

Georgia motorists hitting the road for the Memorial Day holiday weekend will need to remember more than a swimsuit and sunscreen when piling into the car.

They’ll need to remember to buckle up because if they don’t, they will be ticketed by one of the thousands of officers all over Georgia who will be looking for unbuckled drivers and passengers.

That’s because it’s time for the state’s annual May campaign of Click It or Ticket.

And while Georgia’s safety belt policy is in effect 24/7/365, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) takes high travel periods like Memorial Day to launch high visibility enforcement campaigns to highlight the existing law.

The national campaign begins today and GOHS is warning all motorists that even if they’re just passing through Georgia on the way to the beach, everyone can expect a ticket if they don’t buckle up properly.

The increased enforcement remains in Georgia because unbelted traffic deaths are still numbering in the hundreds every year.

In 2011, Georgia experienced 421 traffic deaths involving unrestrained victims.

That represents 34 percent of all traffic fatalities.

While Georgia has steadily reduced its unrestrained fatalities every year since 2007 when there were 637 such deaths, the state is still on track to experience more than 400 such fatalities by the end of 2013.

The Click It or Ticket campaign in Georgia will run from May 20th to June 2nd
