City of Lavonia to Review Ordinance Regarding Chickens

Raising backyard chickens has become more popular since the price of eggs went up dramatically a couple of years ago.

And some residents of Lavonia keep chickens even though the City has an ordinance banning them.

Now one Lavonia citizen has complained to the City about being cited for having poultry when other residents who raise chickens have not.

At the Lavonia City Council meeting this week, City Manager Charles Cawthon said the problem is that the City’s ordinance is vague and needs to be updated.

He said a dispute over the poultry between the woman and her neighbors prompted the citation but also caused him to take a closer look at the ordinance itself.

Cawthon then recommended the City begin working on a more updated, specific ordinance for poultry.

The council agreed to allow staff to work on a new poultry ordinance.

Cawthon said he would try to have a draft of a revised ordinance ready for the Council to review at their August work session.
