The City of Hartwell has agreed to sell the Cateechee golf course and conference center to private investors.

Hartwell City Manager Jonathon Herschel said the sale was necessary for Pilot Realty Investors and Diversified Golf in order for them to expand.

Herschel says however, the City will continue to use the golf course as part of their wastewater facility.

“They rent the golf course portion from us. That’s our spray field and part of our sewer system,” Herschel explained. “So, Cateechee came to us and they want to develop part of the golf course. We told them that’s fine, but first we have to have a spray agreement with a perpetual easement, which allows us to continue to use the golf course as our spray field. So, we sold the property to them so they could develop it and put it on the tax rolls. Then, we executed an agreement that allows us to continue to spray on the golf course.”

Herschell said they are selling the property to Diversified Golf for $720,000.

Under the terms of the sale, if Diversified defaults on the payments, the golf course will revert to the City.

Owners of Catechee’s conference center, Charly and Kelli Schell, say they plan to expand the conference center offerings by building 19 cottage-style homes for either full-time or part-time residents.

The homes would be rented through a rental management agency.

Herschel said they plan to close on the sale next week.
