Two Atlanta gang members are in the Franklin County Detention Center after Lavonia Police say they were caught red-handed breaking into the Hill’s Exxon.

It happened in the early morning hours of Monday, June 15, according to Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.

Carlisle says one of his officers was on routine patrol when he spotted the pair at the door of the Hill’s convenience store.

“On June 15 at approximately 2:50a, one of the Lavonia Police officers, Ezra Segars, was on routine patrol. As he rounded the corner of Hill’s Exxon he observed a vehicle parked in front of the convenience store. He immediately alerted to two subjects at the front door, who upon seeing officer Segars, entered their vehicle and fled onto the Interstate with officer Segars following in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” he said.

Carlisle said a bolo was put out for the vehicle and the two suspects as they sped south in the Interstate, and two Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies on I-85 southbound spotted the car and gave pursuit.

“The deputies in a professional manner and my gratitude goes out to the Sheriff and his staff began to pursue the vehicle that matched the description that had been given out by officer Segars. The subject driving the vehicle, with no regard to public safety, began to drive at excessive speed south on 85 with franklin County officers in pursuit,” he said.

Carlisle said the pursuit entered Jackson County at which timethe deputies were able to get the vehicle stopped on the side of the Interstate.

Two men in the car were arrested and then taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia to be checked out after complaining of pain.

According to the Chief, the car the suspects were driving had been reported stolen out of Birmingham, Alabama.

Carlisle said surveillance video from Hill’s Exxon shows the pair breaking into the convenience store.

“We actually have video footage from Hill’s Exxon that shows both subjects used tools to pry the door open. And just as soon as the door was opened, officer Segars drove up. I’d like to commend officer Segars for doing his job, going above and beyond, and being the absolute point man and bringing this case to fruition,” Carlisle said.

Carlisle said both suspects are career criminals, have served time in prison, and are members of an Atlanta gang called 30-Deep.

They are identified as Undra Bradley and Vernard O’Neill – both of Atlanta and they face a laundry list of charges.

Bradley has been charged with burglary, possession of tools during the commission of a crime, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and six counts of Georgia gang activity. And an additional charge of theft by receiving stolen property for the vehicle and felony fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer,” Carlisle said. “O’Neal is charged with burglary, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and six counts of the Georgia Gang Act.”

Carlisle noted the pair each had Georgia driver licenses with the address of a State Prison located in Forsyth, Georgia.

Carlisle said he is checking with the Department of Driver Services to find out why they had that address listed on their licenses.
