Arrest Made in Copper Burglaries in Elbert County

In Elbert County, authorities expect more arrests in connection with a burglary last week.

It happened last Thursday, June 4, at  cabins on Greg Shoals Road.

Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Darren Scarborough said when deputies arrived, they found the cabin had been broken into and discovered that an adjacent cabin had also been burglarized.

Scarborough said the suspects were stealing copper tubing and copper wire out of the cabins.

According to the investigator, deputies were called back out to the area later that day when a suspicious person was reported by some residents who live nearby.

Neighbors told deputies they saw a man walking down the dirt road they did not know.

Deputies later found the man and took him in for questioning.

By Friday, Scarborough said they had collected enough evidence to charge 27-year-old Kevin Lee Potter of Anderson, SC with felony burglary.

Scarborough said substantial amount of damage was done to the cabins as a result of the suspects cutting out the copper tubing and wiring.

Potter remains in the Elbert County Detention Center.  Scarborough says they believe Potter did not act alone.
The investigation continues and more arrests are expected.
