Alleged Burglary Caught in the Act by Police Chief

Royston Police Chief Donnie Boleman is crediting community involvement with the capture of an accused burglar he says he caught red handed.

It happened April 16th at an apartment complex on Jones Circle.  Boleman said his office received a call from a person about a person acting suspiciously.  The caller told Boleman he saw a black male lift up a window screen at his neighbor’s apartment and he said it looked like the man was trying to get in.

“I asked him if he could meet with me and show me the area he was talking about,” Boleman said. “So, I drove there and while we were standing at his location, I asked him if the black male I saw walking behind the apartment building was the man he was talking about and he said, ‘yes.'”

Boleman and the witness continued to watch the man as he walked around the apartment.  That’s when, Boleman said, he saw the suspect try to break in to the apartment.

“We stayed and watched the suspect walk around to the back of the apartment, lift the window, and actually crawl inside,” Boleman said. “So I called my officers and they came and immediately surrounded the apartment and the suspect was arrested without any altercation.”

Arrested was 23-year old Marcus Deantae Curaton of Royston.  Boleman said it’s that kind of community involvement that helps Royston Police keep the town relatively crime free.

“We do take a lot of preventive measures but also do have a high solve rate. So overall, if you do committ a crime in Royston, we will find out who you are and you will be brought to justice,” Boleman said.

Curaton is charged with burglary and remains in the Hart County Detention Center.
