AARP Tax Aide in Hartwell Cancels In-person Tax Preparation Help

The COVID pandemic has forced the local AARP Tax Aide chapter to cancel face-to-face help at the Adult Learning Center.

In a notice issued this week, Dixie Dennis from AARP – Tax Aide said the Hartwell AARP Tax Aide facility is NOT permitted to provide face to face tax preparation services until further notice.

Dennis suggested a number alternatives for those who need assistance with their tax return.

If you have use of a computer, you may request on-line support to help you prepare your own return by calling 1-888-227-7669 or submitting a request through the AARP website: https://taxaideqa.aarp.org/hc/en-us/requests/new.

If you are able to scan your documents and are a returning client, you may request a qualified AARP Tax Aide volunteer to prepare your return by calling 706-371-6058 or emailing your scanned documents to [email protected].

Second, you can prepare your own tax return using IRS’s free tax filing service at: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.

Or third, find a paid tax preparer or complete your own return manually or pay for and use tax preparation software.

If you’d like more time to file your taxes, you’ll need to submit Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) by April 15, 2021.

With a tax extension, you can extend your filing due date by six months, up to October 15.

Dennis apologized for the inconvenience on behalf of the AARP Tax Aide and said they hope to resume walk-in service in 2022.
