A Royston man is facing drug and other charges after a traffic stop by the Canon Police Department.

According to Canon Police, officers conducted a traffic stop on Thursday Sept. 11 at approximately 10 p.m. on a white Nissan due to a taillight violation within the city limits.

During the traffic stop, officers noted suspicious behavior from the driver that prompted a further investigation, according to Canon Police Chief Brad Cook.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 30.2 ounces of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $2,000.

Cook said various drug-related objects and a firearm were also found in the vehicle.

The driver was taken into custody without incident and is facing multiple charges related to drug possession and firearm offenses.

He is identified as 42-year-old Joel Tensley Williams Jr., of Royston.

Williams is charged with possession and use of drug-related objects, possession of marijuana–misdemeanor less than an ounce, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, taillights/taillight lenses required, possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

Cook added that the Canon Police Department is committed to maintaining the safety and well-being of our community, and this incident underscores our ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime.

He said the Canon Police Department will continue to work with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that such criminal activity does not flourish in the area, Cook said.
