Lavonia Kindness Month Focuses on Helping Animals at the Shelter

The City of Lavonia is continuing its kindness initiative this month by turning its attention to helping animals in need.

At the Lavonia City Council meeting earlier this month, Mayor Courtney Umbehant encouraged citizens to donate to the local animal shelter.

Umbehant noted recently that as of June this year, the Northeast Animal Shelter has saved more than 600 lives.

Beyond serving as a public intake shelter for lost, stray, abandoned and owner surrender dogs, cats, and other pets in Hart and Franklin counties, the shelter also conducts low-cost rabies clinics and collaborates with the Hart County Humane Society to offer subsidized spay/neuter certificates to help reduce the number of unwanted pets in our area.

This month, the City is asking for citizens to donate to the shelter.

According to Shelter Director Tammi Jourdenais, they are always in need of pet food, litter, cleaning items, bedding, and other pet supplies.

Items can be dropped off at Downtown Development Authority and Main Street offices at the Historic Lavonia Train Depot beginning Monday through next Friday, August 23.

The DDA/Main Street offices are open from 8:30a to 4:30p Monday – Friday.

Currently, the NEGA Animal Shelter is closed due to another outbreak of the parvovirus so all donations must be dropped off at the Train Depot.
