Three Indicted in High-Speed Chase That Killed Unborn Baby

Three people have been indicted on 24 counts relating to a high-speed chase that resulted in the death of an unborn baby.

Kayla Nicole Starks, Jovontae Marquela Hill, and Lakendra Lashay Davis were indicted by the Franklin County Grand Jury on one count of Feticide by Motor Vehicle, Two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Theft by Possession of Stolen Mail, Forgery, Identity Fraud, and a host of drug and traffic violations.

According to the indictment, on May 8, Kayla Starks was the driver of a 2023 white GMC Yukon and failed to stop when a deputy tried to pull her over on I85 northbound.

Sgt. Ray Dean, with Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post 52 said Troopers were requested by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to assist in a vehicle pursuit with the Yukon with speeds reaching up to 120 mph.

Dean said as the pursuit approached mile marker 175 on 85 northbound, a Trooper successfully performed a PIT maneuver causing the Yukon to rotate clockwise off the east shoulder of the road.

The Yukon struck a guardrail end and overturned multiple times off the east shoulder of 85.

Starks, who was also pregnant, suffered blunt force trauma to the abdomen and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

She was airlifted to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where the unborn child did not survive.

Starks was indicted on one count of Feticide by Motor Vehicle, three counts of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, and two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.

Hill, Davis, and Starks were also each indicted on charges of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property for the theft of the 2023 Yukon, Theft by Possession of Stolen Mail, and four counts of Forgery in the Third Degree.

The trio allegedly had in their possession stolen checks totaling over $42-thousand.
