Nine to Go: NE GA Animal Shelter Pushes Back Euthanasia Date for Remaining Shelter Dogs

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter Director Tammi Jourdenais is thanking the kind-hearted people who came out last week and over the weekend to adopt dogs to prevent them from being euthanized Friday.

Concerned, compassionate people from across our area turned out to rescue dogs over the weekend, but the shelter continues to need your help.

Last week, the SOS went out for help finding homes for the dogs after an inspector with the State Agricultural Department determined the shelter was over capacity and 25 dogs had to be put down.

Jourdenais initially indicated the dogs would be put down last Friday but that was pushed back to today. However, on Monday, she told WLHR News that they will now wait until Wednesday in hopes more people will come out today and adopt the last nine dogs.

Most of the dogs on the euthanasia list were either adopted or went to no-kill rescue groups according to Jourdenais.

As we’ve reported earlier, over the past year the number of stray, abandoned, and owner-surrendered dogs has increased dramatically not just in Franklin and Hart Counties but across the country, largely due to inflation and the rising costs of pet care and the Lavonia shelter has consistently been at capacity.

Jourdenais said Monday that while dogs were being adopted out over the weekend, more were being turned in.

All of the dogs available for adoption are current on their shots including rabies and come with a free spay/neuter certificate at one of the local animal hospitals listed on the form.

That’s over $250 in savings from what you have to spend for shots and fixing at your local animal hospital for a free dog or puppy.

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is located on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia.

They are open today and tomorrow from 11a to 4p for adoptions.
