SUSPECT IN CANON HOMEOWNER ATTACK DUE BACK IN COURT

The attorney for a Canon man will be back in Franklin County Superior Court next week asking for bond for their client

Rodrigo Cruz Ugalde is accused of assaulting a law enforcement officer and attempting to rob an elderly homeowner last summer and faces multiple charges.

It happened June 16, 2023, at a home at the corner of Bear Creek and McGee Roads in the Canon area.

Sheriff Steve Thomas tells WLHR News Law Enforcement responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call about what the caller said was a prowler on the property.

When Officers arrived they encountered a Hispanic male who had possession of a firearm.

The Sheriff said the victim told deputies that he was doing yard work at his home when  Ugalde, who was said to live next door, came onto his property armed with a gun and got into an altercation with the victim.

Sheriff Thomas said the victim was severely injured and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Ugalde was arrested on 14 separate charges including 11 felony counts that included of Criminal Attempt to Commit Home Invasion, two counts of Robbery, three counts of Possession of a Firearm/knife During the Commission of a Crime, Elder Abuse, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, and two counts of Aggravated Assault Upon a Law Enforcement Officer.

He is also charged with three counts of Cruelty to Children because Thomas said Uglade had his three children with him at the time of the incident.

The children were taken into protective custody.

Ugalde was initially denied bond by the Franklin County Magistrate Judge on the charges of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.

According to the Court Calendar, his attorney will be back in court on the 28th to again ask the Judge for a bond for his client.
