Year in Review: FC School System Makes Student Safety a Top Priority in 2023

Continuing our Year in Review, the Franklin County Board of Education took several steps in 2023 to make sure students are safe when they’re at school.

After several incidents in 2022 as well as an incident in January of this year involving students bringing weapons to school, the Board of Education began work in earnest to install new safety equipment at all of the schools.

Additionally, in February Franklin County Charter School Director of Safety & Security Scott Andrews held a public forum to answer questions from parents regarding what the system is doing to protect students.

And in the spring, the Board announced the purchase and installation of new weapons detection systems at all of the schools.

Those systems went online in August at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year and a new weapons detection system was installed at the elementary schools.

Additionally, a one-day seminar on school safety was also held in March to teach rural law enforcement, first responders, and local school systems how to partner together to solve a school incident or crisis.

In October the Franklin County Board of Education voted to allocate $51,000 from SPLOST funds for the purchase of a new video security camera service for all of the schools.
