Reports of a possible shooting incident at the Elberton-12 County Fair Saturday have caused fair officials to tighten security and bar unchaperoned teens.

In a statement issued Saturday night on the Elberton-12 County Fair Facebook Page, officials stated that after a thorough investigation, it was determined that there was no shooting incident and they called the rumor an intentional act to disrupt the family-oriented fair.

“This was an Intentional Act to harm the fair and disrupt families having fun and enjoying a night out. Due to this event, we will now be enforcing a strict policy of no unaccompanied minors. Anyone 17 years and younger must now be chaperoned by an adult 21 years and older. There will (also) be restrictions on how many minors an Adult can chaperone at one time. We have enlisted even more security and Law Enforcement for the remainder of the Fair.”

On Sunday, Elberton Police released a statement on the incident stating witnesses of a fight among teens at the fair told police a gun may have been fired.

“Elberton PD Officers arrived to learn of a fight among young people and reports of gunfire in the same area. We can confirm a fight occurred due to a video surfacing of it and there is enough eyewitness testimony to believe a gun may have been fired,” according to the statement by Police.

However, Elberton Police say so far no one has come forward with any reports of injury from either the fight or the gunshot(s).

“The Police Department will continue to work closely with the Sheriff’s Office as they continue to investigate and if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or more importantly any evidence of the incident please speak with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office at 706-283-2421 as they are handling any investigation as the paid Fair security this week,” the Police statement concluded.

This is the 90th year for the Elberton-12 County Fair.

The fair runs through October Saturday, October 29.
