Hart Habitat now accepting applications for house no. 21

Hart County Habitat for Humanity is nearing completion of their 20th home, which means they are ready to begin the process of building No. 21. That process starts with finding the right family.

Hart County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Darlene Nixon first talks about the home-building process and how long it takes the group to actually build the home.

It really varies depending on the program we’re using. The last 3-4 builds we’ve actually used what we call a builder’s blitz. That’s where we partner with a lot of our local builders and suppliers to get as much done on a house within a week as we can. We’ve been successful in getting anywhere from 80-95 percent in that week. It’s like a little dance with all of the volunteers and contractors that come together to provide all of their expertice and abilities and just from the ground up you watch that house emerge over a week’s time. It’s just a beautiful thing. Other than that, at other times it could take as much as 6-8 months depending on volunteerism, their time and what’s available,” said Nixon.

Nixon then gives an overview of the application process.

We work pretty much on a waiting list between times we accept applications. We are bound by the same regulations as any other mortgage company is. Once you fill out an application, then there are certain things you have to do in certain timelines. So, once we are ready like we are now, we go back to our waiting list and contact everybody and make sure they are still in Hart County, because that is our service area, make sure they are still needing an application and we will mail them a packet with an application and instructions,” said Dixon.

According to Nixon, Habitat will be hosting a workshop to help applicants fill out the forms in the very near future.

If they have any questions or need help filling it out, then we’ll do that, and that’s what the workshop is about. We wanted to have one place, and a timeframe that they could come and get assistance. That’s going to be Tuesday, Jan. 29, and it’s going to be at our Reclaim Market, thrift store and service center building. It’s located at 900 Benson St. in Hartwell just before you get to Quality Foods shopping center. It will run from 5:30-7:30 that evening,” said Nixon.

Nixon said anyone who wants a packet can give them a call or just come at that time and someone will be available to help with the process.
