Body Found in Carnesville Could Be Missing Athens Man
A body believed to be that of a missing Athens man, is now with the GBI Crime Lab awaiting autopsy.
According to Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas, a compact blue sedan, matching the description of a vehicle belonging to the missing man, was found in the parking lot of Middle River Baptist Church on SR320 outside of Carnesville last Thursday.
“The vehicle had a Clarke County tag,” Thomas said. “After an exhaustive search of the area around the church by Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies, Athens-Clarke County Police and K-9 units, a body was found in a clump of trees on the backside of the adjoining property approximately a mile from the church.”
Thomas said it appeared the man died from a single gunshot wound to the head. His body was sent to the GBI Crime lab for autopsy and a positive ID. The victim’s name has not yet been released pending a positive identification. Thomas said the investigation continues.
