Elbert Schools Adopting Concussion Policy

The next school year in Elbert County will come with an increased focus on sports injuries.

Elbert County’s interim School Superintendent Chuck Bell announced last week that just before the beginning of each athletic season, all parents or legal guardians will be provided with an information sheet informing them of the nature and risk of concussions and head injuries.

Bell says it’s important that both parents and students have increased awareness on the issue.

“With this we hope to raiser awareness for the potential of head injury; not just for the contact sports, but for sports where you may not think the risk is there”, said Bell. “I think it’s important that our athletes, as well as their parents and guardians have an increased awareness of concussion management.”

Under the new policy, if a student participating in an athletic activity exhibits symptoms of a concussion, they will be removed from the activity and will be examined by a health care provider.

A “health care provider” in this case means a licensed physician or another licensed individual under a physician’s supervision.

Bell says this is a good move that will help ensure the safety of students who participate in athletic activities.

“It’s a good thing, especially when you have students where athletics are so close to their heart”, explained Bell. “It’s great to know that we can go about our work preparing young people for success on the field, on the floor, or in the classroom while insuring their safety at the same time.”

Since this is considered board policy, it must remain on the table for a minimum of thirty days before being voted on and instituted.

A motion to do that was approved last week during a called meeting of the Elbert County Board of Education.
