Franklin County to Take Over Old Poultry Lab

An abandoned poultry lab in Franklin County will get a new lease on life now that the State has agreed to turn it over to the county.

At their work session last week, the board of commissioners heard from commission chair Thomas Bridges who said he had contacted the director of the Georgia State Property Commission and requested the county take possession of the building.

Bridges said the State agreed but with conditions.

“They are willing to turn it over to us with the stipulation that we use the building for public purposes for Franklin County citizens,” Bridges told the commission.

At their regular meeting Monday, the board did vote to approve a resolution accepting the old poultry lab.

County manager Billy Morse said the building on T. Mauldin Road has been vacant for a number of years and there are a number of things he said it could be used for.

“Basically, the only thing we committed to in our resolution is that it will be for public purposes,” Morse said. “I think there is the thought that the county offices could use it, with the possibility that the Sheriff’s investigators could also use it.”

Morse said the county is not paying for the building.  He said the deed will be transferred to the county by the state.

Now that the board has approved the resolution to take over the building, a letter will be sent to the Georgia Property Commission asking they transfer ownership.
