15 to Go: NE GA Animal Shelter Puts Out SOS for Homes to Avoid Euthanizing Dogs

These are five of the 15 dogs still left that need urgent adoption

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is pleading for help from the public and no-kill rescue groups to save the remaining 15 dogs from being euthanized.

All this week, Shelter Director Tammi Jourdenais has posted on social media photos of the dogs who are at risk of being euthanized unless homes or foster homes can be found soon.

“An inspector from the Georgia Department of Agriculture recently visited the shelter and said it was over capacity and ordered staff to euthanize 25 dogs,” she told WLHR News.

Because of the overwhelming number of dogs and puppies that have been turned in over the past months, shelter staff have worked to save and adopt out as many as they can in order to make room for more unwanted animals but the tide of unwanted animals plus the strays brought to the shelter by various animal control officers has not let up, which led to the overcrowding.

“I’ve contacted my network of no-kill rescue groups and they, like NEGAS, many are full and can’t take any more until they have more adoptions,” she said. “We have been working hard to temperament test, get paperwork together, heartworm test, and video tape dogs for rescue organizations who have kindly offered to save some lives.”

Jourdenais said as of Thursday afternoon they still have 15 dogs left of the 25 ordered to be put down that have yet to be adopted.

“We were going to euthanize the remaining Friday but I’ve extended the date until next Tuesday to give people the opportunity to adopt a dog through Saturday,” she said Thursday. “We hope this extension allows those of you wanting to adopt the opportunity to come in and pick out your new best friend.”

The shelter is open today and Saturday from 11a – 4p and again next Tuesday and Wednesday from 11a – 4p.

All of the dogs at the shelter are current on their shots, including rabies, and come with a spay/neuter certificate.  Altogether that’s a more than $250 savings over what it would cost for a free dog or puppy for shots and fixing if you had to pay out of pocket.

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is located on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia just past the ball fields.

The shelter also offers low-cost spay/neuter certificates if you need to get your dog or cat fixed.

The certificates are offered courtesy of the Hart County Humane Society.
