Unemployment Rate in December Remains Unchanged

The Georgia Mountains unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.4 percent in December.

Initial claims for unemployment were up 20% last month as well.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the labor force in the Georgia Mountains Region was down 35 last month and the number of employed workers was also down slightly.

The Georgia Mountains Region includes Franklin, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, White, Banks, Dawson, and Forsyth counties.

Meantime, Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that most of the Regional areas all recorded a drop in the unemployment rate in December.

Thompson credited the State’s highly-skilled workforce and business-friendly environment which continues to drive positive economic growth across all corners of the state.

Thompson added that with the unemployment rate trending lower than the national average, Georgia is well-positioned to help businesses remain competitive and find top-tier talent.
