That’s the problem facing the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter.  The overcrowding has prompted the shelter to institute a kind of BOGO sale during the month of October.

It’s called Pick a Pair.

Shelter director Jeff Roberts says people will be able to adopt a dog or cat at a regular adoption fee and get a second one at no charge.

“Many of our animals have bonded with other animals in the same kennel,” said Roberts. “We are trying to get animals out as a pair, so it can dramatically free up cage space for other animals that we have.”

Additionally, Roberts said any animal that has been at the shelter for 100 days or more can be adopted for half of the regular adoption fee.

Roberts says the shelter is currently housing more animals than what it is designed to hold.

“We should be caring for about 150 animals at the shelter,” said Roberts. “We have over 200 animals at the shelter now. We have other animals in foster care, so we really need to get these guys out of the shelter. We are continuing our transfer programs, but we really need to try get people in the community to help us adopt animals so we can find space for the new guys that keep coming in.”

According to Roberts, the shelter sees an additional 50 animals come in each week.
