Toccoa’s Community Pool to Re-Open, Officials Say

An update on the pool problem in Toccoa.

Last week, the director of the Toccoa YMCA said the pool would remain closed this summer because of needed expensive repairs.

Now, the Toccoa City Commission has announced city crews are working to fix the pool so it can open after all.

At their regular meeting Monday, Toccoa City Commissioner Gail Fry said repairs began late last week when she received a phone call from an employee with Patterson Pump offering to do whatever was required to get the pool up and running.

Fry went on to say that call led to a meeting the next day at the Doyle Street Pool to look at and work on the pump.

Fry said Patterson Pump sent their top man who travels all over the United States and was just there for that afternoon.

She said he was able to get the broken pool pump working by replacing a valve.

According to Fry, so far the valve and pump continue to work.

In addition, she says that the city feels that the leaks in the pool were due to a crack near the top of the pool and it could be repaired.

Fry said the plan is to scrub the pool clean, finish pumping it and fix the crack.

After that, the city will fill the pool and see if the water holds in the pool and the pump continues to work.

If so, she said the pool should be ready for public use by next Monday.

In addition, Fry asked the city commission to grant permission for the city to purchase new chairs and umbrellas for people sitting the pool, a request that city commissioners unanimously granted.
