The Lavonia City Council and Mayor Courtney Umbehant will meet this evening  for a work session

Six items are on the agenda for discussion and no votes will be taken.

Among the items to be discussed include festivals and markets, new or improved signage at the City Park as well as putting up Welcome signs at the edge of town.

Other items include taking advantage of state and federal programs such as the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing.

GICH offers communities a three-year program of collaboration and technical assistance related to housing and community development.

The objective of the Initiative is to help communities create and launch a locally based plan to meet their housing needs.

The City has already acknowledged the shortage of good workforce housing, which can prevent potential new industries from moving to the area.

This past spring a town home developer from Athens went before both the County Board of Commissioners to present their plans to build a multi-unit, upscale town home rental community on Ross Place.

The plan is to build a 180 town home unit subdivision similar to one in Athens called the Cottages at Ridge Point.

In May, the City Council voted to approve a 20-year tax incentive contingent upon legal review from city counsel and approval from the other entities involved.

In other business tonight, the council and mayor will get an update from City Manager Charles Cawthon  on the progress of the Gateway Sewer project.

Tonight’s work session takes place at 6p at Lavonia City Hall and is open to the public.
