Streetscape Meeting Tonight

A reminder to Lavonia area residents about tonight’s public input session on the Streetscape plans for downtown Lavonia.

Lavonia City Fathers are planning a sweeping revitalization project over the next several years that they hope will transform the downtown area into a bustling, attractive area for residents and visitors alike.

Studio Main, a design company in South Carolina, is in Lavonia this week getting a first-hand look at the current downtown and meeting with city, business, civic leaders, and other stakeholders to get their input on what they would like to see downtown.

Lavonia Mayor Courtney Umbehant recently took to social media to encourage citizens to come to a public input session tonight.

“I want to make a special invitation to all of you to come participate at the Lavonia Depot in a streetscape planning project.  What this is, is we’re putting together a multi-year plan to redesign downtown Lavonia, to beautify it, to add different features that will benefit our entire community. And we want your ideas, and we want your opinions.  So come out on Tuesday, September 27th from 5:00-7:00pm for the public input time.  Drop in with the ones that are helping to design this, and share your ideas and opinions.”

For the past several years, the City has been working on plans to redesign the downtown area since the State’s announcement of plans to continue the 17-bypass around Lavonia.

When elected, Mayor Umbehant said one of his goals was to find new ways to continue to attract people to downtown Lavonia once the bypass is complete.

Last year, the Mayor announced the Department of Transportation has begun buying up the rights of way needed to begin work.

He said at that time GDOT expects to complete the work over the next five years.

In his announcemet Umbehant said it’s important citizens turn out to meet the designers and convey their thoughts and ideas.

“This is kind of a way to speak now or forever hold your peace.  We want your ideas.  We want your opinions, not the complaints later down the road.  If you don’t share your opinions and ideas, don’t complain if you don’t get what you want.”

Again, the Streetscape public meeting takes place this evening from 5p to 7p at the Lavonia Train Depot.
