Royston Places Third in Division in 2019 Governor’s Challenge Awards

The Royston Police Department placed third in their division in this year’s Governor’s Challenge Awards.

The Governor’s Challenge Awards honor law enforcement agencies for their work to prevent crashes, injuries and deaths in their communities, college campuses and military installations.

Royston Police placed third in Category 2: 11-25 Officers.

Royston Police Chief Donnie Boleman said his department had a number of safety initiatives this year that contributed to Royston Police being honored this year.

“We have a very active care seat safety check program. We routinely check, inspect, replace and install car seats for citizens in our community,” Boleman explained. “Our Explorer Program is serving our community in educating young people on Georgia Law all the way to taking them up to National events. And then on top of that we had our first Public Safety Festival this year at our first-ever spring festival, which focused on public safety and community events. It turned real well and it was good to be able to educate the public on safety.”

Boleman said their Explorer program has won many state awards over the years. He went on to say educating and connecting with the community is one of his department’s primary goals.

Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Director Allen Poole said the Governor’s Challenge is his office’s way to let State law enforcement officers know they are making a difference every day when it comes to saving lives on our roads.

Law enforcement agencies are evaluated not just for enforcement initiatives, but for unique problem-solving in their communities, using public information activities, and creating departmental policies that support their traffic enforcement campaign efforts.

This was the 20th year for the Governor’s Challenge Awards.
