Railroad Work in Lavonia Pushed to Friday

Work to replace railroad ties in downtown Lavonia should finally get underway Friday..

The Hartwell Railroad had planned to do the work last weekend, but according to City Manager Gary Fesperman, the work had to be pushed back.

“Hartwell Railroad experienced difficulties in getting a contract crew to come out over the weekend,” Fesperman said. “So that work has now been pushed back to Friday.”

Crews will be tearing out old railroad ties along Main St. between the train depot and Grogan St. in downtown Lavonia and replacing them with new ones.  That work should take about a day.

After that, Fesperman said his road crews should finally be able to start the repaving work on the Gazebo side of Main St.

“Barring any further difficulties or delays in scheduling, we will be starting the repaving on E. Main St. from West Avenue all the way down to the intersection of Grogan St.,” Fesperman said.

The downtown repaving, Fesperman said, will be done in four phases but should be completed by the end of June.

The City is using SPLOST revenue to pay for the repaving projects.

Then, in July, the Georgia DOT plans to repave SR59 from Highway 17 to Vickery St/SR77 and SR77 north to Wright St and south to the Hart County line.

More information on that project as details become available.
