Petreaus to Join Camp Toccoa Project Board

The man who once led U.S. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan is signing up for a new mission in Stephens County.

Retired General and Former CIA Director David Petreaus has agreed to join the “Camp Toccoa at Currahee” board.  (http://camptoccoaatcurrahee.com/)

The “Camp Toccoa at Currahee” project is an effort to preserve and develop the original site of Camp Toccoa on Currahee Mountain, where the first U.S. paratroopers trained during World War II.

The camp and its soldiers were made famous in the HBO TV series “Band of Brothers.”

Robin Sink-Mcclelland is The Camp Toccoa At Currahee Board president and the daughter of  506th Parachute Infantry Regiment Commander Lieutenant Colonel Robert Sink.

“I am delighted that he responded as he did and he sees this as a way he can give back,” said Sink-McClelland. “I think it will just be of great benefit to the project and it gives us great gravitas.”

Sink-Mcclelland says a board member indicated to her that Petraeus might be interested in getting involved and he agreed after she reached out to him.

“I am delighted to have been invited to support the effort to remember and honor the members of the four great airborne regiments that trained at Camp Toccoa during World War II,” Petreaus said.  “As one of those who was privileged to serve with members of several of those regiments in subsequent decades — and then to lead others during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — I feel very fortunate to be able to lend a hand to the initiative to preserve the historic Camp Toccoa site and the area around it.”

As for what role Petraeus will play on the board, Sink-Mcclelland says that has not been decided, but said he is ready and willing to help.
