North Carolina Man Facing Charges After High-Speed Chase
A North Carolina man is facing charges in Franklin County after leading deputies and state troopers on a high-speed chase down I-85.
According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Sgt. Ray Dean of GSP Post 52 in Lavonia, it began Wednesday afternoon at around 1:42 p.m. when a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a black 2022 Kia K5 for a speeding violation near mile marker 172.
The driver of the Kia, identified as 33-year-old Daquieze Davonte Lumar Marshall of Charlotte, NC, sped off, and a pursuit ensued.
The deputy called for assistance from the Georgia State Patrol and the trooper became the primary in the pursuit on I-85 southbound near mile marker 154 in Banks County.
Sgt. Dean said Marshal passed multiple vehicles in the grass median through moderate traffic, and at that time, the Banks County Sheriff’s Office became primary on Interstate 85 near mile marker 149.
Marshal then turned right onto the grass shoulder of Interstate 85 near mile marker 147 and began traveling the wrong way up the Interstate 85 Southbound Exit 147 on ramp. He then turned left and began traveling westbound on GA 98.
“While attempting to improperly pass a red 2015 Toyota RAV4, the front passenger’s side of the Kia struck the rear driver’s side of the Toyota in the westbound lane of GA 98,” Dean said. “After impact, the Kia traveled off the south shoulder of GA 98 and struck a stop sign with its front, and then struck a driveway culvert and became airborne for approximately 129 feet. After landing, the Kia overturned multiple times and came to an uncontrolled final rest on its top, facing west, off the south shoulder of GA 98 in a group of small trees.”
The Toyota traveled off the north shoulder, began to rotate counterclockwise, and came to an uncontrolled final rest, facing east, in the westbound lane of GA 98.
Marshal suffered serious injuries, which required life-saving measures from on-scene deputies and Troopers.
He was subsequently transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center (Gainesville Campus). His condition is not known.
The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries, and no medical treatment was required, Dean said.
Dean said all charges are being handled by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
He added that the incident is still under investigation and the Troop B Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is assisting.
