New Mountain Education Center Opens in Bowman
The Mountain Education Center of North Georgia is opening a new learning center in Bowman for teens who have dropped out of high school.
Begun in 2001, the Mountain Education Center is a charter school system with 15 locations in North Georgia – including one in Toccoa.
Mountain Education Center spokesman George Counter said the new Bowman Education Center is located in the old Bowman Elementary School on Adams St.
“Elbert, Madison, and Hart counties were interested in starting a Mountain Ed high school in that area,” Counter said. “Bowman had closed their elementary school, so we took it over and remodeled it and we’re going to open a Mountain Ed high school in Elbert County.”
Counter said the school will serve students in the Elbert, Hart, and Madison County area with night classes starting in the fall. Registration for those classes begins June 17th, according to Counter.
“Registration will be from 5p to 8p for our fall classes. Fall classes will begin August 12th,” Counter said. “However we are taking registrations now for those who want to take credit recovery classes.”
Those classes are going on through the summer months. Mountain Education Centers are designed for high school students who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend a regular high school. Classes are self-paced on computer with certified teachers and tutors also available.
“They can come to us at night and finish their diploma,” Counter said. “Or if they want to catch up, they can transfer back to their regular high school. We offer all of the courses the state offers and we meet all the minimum state requirements for a Georgia high school diploma. We’re also SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accredited.”
Counter said all teachers are state certified. He said students must also take the state-required high school graduation test.
