NE GA Animal Shelter Re-opened to Public After COVID Scare

The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is now back open to the public after being closed for a week.

Shelter Manager Tammie Jourdenais announced Tuesday that the shelter has returned to its normal Tuesday through Saturday hours.

On July 28th the animal shelter in Lavonia was forced to close after a person came to the shelter to adopt an animal but later tested positive for COVID-19.

Jourdenais said the person had come to the shelter on Friday, July 24 looking to adopt a cat and was there for what she said was an extended period of time interacting with staff.

She said that person later called to say they had been tested for COVID-19 and it came back positive and that another family member had also contracted the disease.

The shelter was immediately shut down and staff did a deep cleaning and disinfecting of the buildings.

All shelter staff were then tested for COVID-19 but the shelter had to remain closed while they waited for the test results to come back.

On Tuesday, Jourdenais said test results for every shelter staff member had come back negative.
