Lavonia Celebrates History Day

May is history month in Georgia.  And to celebrate, the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority and Main Street Program held History Day.  Attendees gathered at the train depot Sunday afternoon.  Downtown Development Authority and Main Street Director Vivian Young says this is an annual event.

“In May Georgia declares history month, and we have some training and historical preservation. And also we try to have a Sunday that we mark off, and we try to do some different things every year.”

Last year’s History Day was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  But this year, it was back on!  Attendees enjoyed hors d’oeuvres while browsing old pictures, documents, and other artifacts including an old safe and saloon mirror.  They were also treated to several old silent films shot in the 50’s by the late Roy Loehr (Leer) and donated by his son Clay.  Roy Loehr was the son of former mayor W.C. Loehr, who served in 1952 and 1953.  If would like to view some of the old films, you can see them on the Lavonia DDA and Main Street Program’s facebook page.  In fact, if you can help identify any of the people in the films, the Lavonia DDA and Main Street Program would like to hear from you.  Call Vivian Young at 706-356-1926.
