Local Shelters Receive Donations in Memory of Betty White

38 of the 45 dogs that were at the shelter when the COVID-19 crisis started were taken in by no-kill rescues in the Northeast and all have been adopted

The Hart County Humane Society and the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter this week benefited from a nationwide fundraising effort in memory of the late actress Betty White.

Shelters and humane societies across the country solicited donations on Betty White’s 100th birthday this week.

White was known for her love of animals and her work with animal welfare, particularly with the American Humane Society.

Hart County Humane Society spokeswoman Barbara Busby said a simple post on their Facebook page resulted in an outpouring of donations.

“We have received $800 so far,” said Busby. “That money will go towards helping our animals and our low-cost spay/neuter program.”

Busby said part of that money is also going to help pay for surgery on one of their foster cats.

Speaking of which, the Humane Society, which is a no-kill animal rescue group, needs your help to name some new arrivals in their foster program.

“We recently took in 24 cats from the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter and in honor of Betty White, we are asking for people to help us name them. We would like to name them after one of the characters she played on TV.  We have a FB page set up for people to submit their suggestions,” she said.

And the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter in Lavonia has also been receiving donations in memory of Betty White and her work with homeless pets, according to Shelter Director Tammi Jourdenais.

“We have had donations come in,” she said. “All of the donations to the shelter are going to go towards our fundraising efforts for the new wing.”

And both the Hart County Humane Society and the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter will take donations in memory of Betty White throughout the year.

If you would like to make a donation to the Hart Co Humane Society you can go online to harthumane.org.
