Local Communications Company Warn Scammers Using Their Name in Phishing Scheme
A local communications company is putting the word out about a phishing scam that uses their name and the name of the company’s owner.
John Smith is the owner of Gunby Communications of Toccoa.
He tells WLHR News the fake emails using his name and Company name started going out Monday afternoon.
Gunby Communications specializes in consulting, designing, deploying and maintaining, state of the art wireless communicaitons systems.
The company primarily provides communications systems for businesses and government entities.
Smith said the email going out is supposedly from him and uses the same email format his company uses and his actual email address as the sender but it’s not from him or his company.
The body of the email states, “Hi there, For your review, please examine the enclosed documents from Gunby Communications Inc.” Then, it provides a link to a pdf file. And ends by saying, “We’d love to hear from you.”
The bottom of the email contains phone numbers you are asked to call but they are not the real Gunby phone numbers.
Smith said since Monday he’s gotten dozens of calls who received the email and wanted to know whether it’s legit.
He thinks the scammer somehow got hold of his client list stored in the company’s computers.
Smith said several people who got the email and contacted him said they they managed to find out exactly where the email was coming from.
If you get an email from Gunby Communications, do not click on the pdf link. Just delete the email and mark it as phishing or spam. Smith advises you also change your email password.
