House and Senate Reapportionment Committees to Hold Statewide Town Hall Hearings

The House Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment Committee, will hold a series of joint town hall hearings across the state of Georgia beginning later this month and running through July to get input from citizens on the redistricting process.

In our area, the closest public hearing will take place Tuesday, July 6 from 5p to 7p in Athens. A location has not yet been announced.

“We will be sending out specific meeting details, including location, to the press approximately 1-2 weeks before each meeting. I would suggest also checking the House website frequently, as well as our House social media accounts. All information that we release to the press in regards to these meetings will also be posted on social and our website,” said Betsy Theroux, Director, House Media Services Office, House Messenger

However, all of the meetings will also be live-streamed and archived at www.legis.ga.gov.

There will also be a virtual hearing on Friday, July 30 from 5p to 7p for those who cannot attend an in-person public hearing.

During these town hall-style hearings, members of the committees will hear and receive input from residents regarding the state’s redistricting process.

The House Committee On Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment is responsible for drawing the boundaries of Georgia’s State House, State Senate and U.S. House districts.

All United States Representatives and state legislators are elected from political divisions called districts.

District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census.

The federal government stipulates that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity.
