High Lake Level Prompts Recreation Area Closings

The high water levels on the reservoir lakes has prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to close some recreation areas at Lakes Hartwell and Russell. 

July13 h igh lake levelSome of the hazardous conditions caused by the high water levels include floating debris, submerged retaining walls and higher river velocity downstream of Thurmond Dam.  The move was announced Wednesday afternoon.

At Hartwell Lake:
– All courtesy docks and most ramps are closed
– Long Point Recreation and Asbury Recreation Area are closed
– Georgia River Campground and Recreation Area is closed
– At the Singing Pines Recreation Area,  the Loop to Shelter and Ramp Closed
– South Carolina River Recreation Area is closed
– At the Broyles Recreation Area – the Shelter Loop is closed
– At 12 Mile Recreation Area – the Beach Loop is closed
– At Springfield Campground – Sites 12-18, 27-48 are closed
– At Oconee Point Campground – Sites 27, 41-42, 61-67 are closed
–  And at Watsadler Campground in Hartwell, – Sites 2 – 5, 8, 27, 28 are closed

At Russell Lake:
– All beaches are closed
– Power has been removed from gas dock and 80 slip docks in Beaver Dam
– And the lowest walkway at fishing pier below dam is closed

Additional flooding is also expected further downstream in the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam Park and at Fury’s Ferry.
