Georgia IRS Representative Says Filings Are Up Over Last Year

irs_logo_2The Internal Revenue Service reports tax filings in 2014 have outpaced filings for the same time last year.

As of Feb. 7, the IRS received 27.3 million returns, up 2.5 percent compared to the same time last year. Electronically filed returns account for almost 96 percent of those filed so far this year.

Here in Georgia, IRS spokesman Mark Green visited the 92.1 studios last week.  Green said he’s already seeing a higher number of returns filed in Georgia this year than in previous years.

“Here in Georgia, we anticipate 4.5 million returns filed, total,” he said. “We anticiapte 3.8 million will be filed electronically. Out of that, we have 1.6 million returns already in the State of Georgia.”

Taxpayers, either through tax preparers or from their home computers, have e-filed more than 26 million returns nationwide so far this year.   That’s up almost 4 percent compared to the same time last year.  Refunds are also up for 2014, with almost 19.5 million issued this year.

The IRS is also reminding taxpayers to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Green said many people are not aware that they may be eligible.

“The credit is available for low to moderate-income families who work,” he said. “Those who fall into this category generally have children. If you have up to three qualifying children, you can get up to $6,000 in credit. But you don’t even have to have children and you can still get up to $487 dollars in credit.”

Green said, taxpayers can go online to IRS.gov to see if they qualify.   Green also wants to remind taxpayers they can get free help with filing their returns through the Internal Revenue Service Web site.
