GDOL to Host Employers in the Know in Toccoa

The Georgia Department of Labor is hosting an Employers in the Know event in September at North Georgia Technical College’s Currahee Campus.
According to Communications Director Sam Hall, the idea for the employer summit stemmed from Labor Commissioner Mark Butler visiting with employers throughout Georgia.
“They told him they really needed better information about things that apply to them like unemployment insurance and changes in taxes or labor laws, that type of thing,” said Hall.
Employers in the Know is for employers who want to learn from experts in a variety of subjects.
“Basically what they are, they’re done in conjunction with our state employer committees and we do a series of them throughout the year,” said Hall. “We’ll have experts in a variety of subjects who can talk to the employers in the Toccoa region to let them know about the types of issues that affect them and the way they run their business and their human resource operations.”
Any employer interested is welcome to attend. Some of the topics that will be discussed include unemployment insurance, labor laws and more.
“They’ll learn about such things as the Fair Labor Standards Act,” said Hall. “There’s going to be someone from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour division to talk about that. We’re going to have an analyst from our unemployment insurance division in Atlanta to talk about changes in unemployment insurance. We have an attorney whose an expert in labor law, who will be there to provide an update on changes in labor laws that would affect employers. And also Connie Smith, whose the director of the Georgia Best program, which is an initiative of the labor department.”
There will also be networking opportunities with other employers as well as question and answer sessions with presenters.
Though the event isn’t until September 27, registering early will lower the cost of attendance. Pre-registering lowers the cost to $40 dollars per person. If you pay at the door, the cost is $50 dollars. The registration fee does include a lunch.
You can pre-register by contacting Janet Chapman at 404.272.4470 or by visiting dol.georgia.gov.
