Franklin-Hart Airport Receives Grant for New Weather Observing System

The Franklin-Hart County Airport Authority is receiving a large grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation for a new Automated Weather Observing System at the Airport.

An Automated Weather Observing System units provide continuous, real-time information and reports on airport weather conditions for pilots.

Airport Authority President Eddie Addison tells WLHR News the Board applied for the grant because the current system is antiquated.

Addison said they have been trying to keep the current AWOS going using old parts from neighboring airports.

The Airport Authority is receiving a grant in the amount of $ 131,384, which Addison said covers the entire cost of putting in a new system.

Addison said the Airport Authority voted last week to accept the grant and move forward with the installation.

He said he 100% funded grant is now approved thru the Authority’s Tentative Allocation and the CARES package.

According to the letter from G-DOT to the Airport Authority, because of the CARES Act, the project is not expected to require matching funds from the Franklin – Hart Airport Authority.
