Elberton Woman Sentenced for Her Part in January 6 2021 Capitol Riot

An Elberton woman will spend 21 days in federal prison for her participation in the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

21-year-old Savannah Danielle McDonald was arrested last June by the FBI.

McDonald pled guilty earlier this year to one misdemeanor count of illegally protesting at the Capitol.

According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week, the judge noted McDonald and an accomplice spent 40 minutes inside the Capitol, which is more than most misdemeanor January 6 defendants, but he credited them for not assaulting police or causing property damage.

At her sentencing hearing, last Tuesday Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Kringer said McDonald “plain out lied” in an FBI interview a few days after the riot when she claimed Capitol Police welcomed them into the Capitol.

After her sentencing, the Judge asked McDonald how she felt about her role in the Capitol riots and she replied quote, “not proud.”
