Carnegie Library Color Craw Set for This Saturday

The Lavonia-Carnegie Library’s ‘Carnegie Color Crawl’ takes place on this Saturday, April 1, at 10:00 AM.

Maggie R. West, Branch Manager of the Franklin Co. Libraries says this is a fun run or walk to raise money for charity and for this year’s Summer Reading Program.

April is CDH Awareness Month and West said that is the charity they chose this year based on a recommendation from one of her library employees.

“One of my staff here, her daughter was born with it. This is a case that is very close to her family,” West said. “So we were trying to think of a charity to partner with. And Lavonia used to do fun runs back in the day and we wanted to bring it back and we wanted to help out a charity. April is CDH Awareness Month. So we thought it would be a really good idea to partner with them.”

CDH or Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is a birth defect in which the diaphragm—the muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest—does not develop completely.

This causes a hole where abdominal organs can migrate into the chest. When that happens, it doesn’t leave enough space for the lungs to develop normally, and this can make it difficult or even impossible for babies born with CDH to breathe.

West said the fun run Saturday will begin at 10a at the Lavonia Carnegie Library.

“So, at 10a we’re going to start at the Library. And then the route goes on the back roads to the VFW and then back to the Library. It’s about 3.2K. We will have the police on the roads looking out for us and they recommended the route.”

When participants get back to the library, West said there will be goodies for them to enjoy.

“H&R Block is donating bottles of water for the runners and Chick-fil-A will deliver some food and drinks for people to have when they get back to the Library. So, we’ll have food inside and we’ll probably present the check then,” West said.

You can register for the Carnegie Color Crawl on Saturday. It’s $30 for adults and children under 5 can run for free.

West said the registration includes your t-shirt and packets of colored powder to use after the run.

T-shirts are being supplied by Tri-County Sporting Goods and their availability will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
