Canon Looking for New Police Chief

The City of Canon is looking for a new police chief.

Canon’s City Council announced at  their recent meeting that former police chief John Thomas has resigned.

He told the council and mayor he has a better offer,” said Canon City Clerk Mary Dowell. “But he did not say what that offer is.”

Thomas will leave next month.

The total police force in the town of 802 is two, one full-time police chief and one part-time officer.

Dowell said current part-time officer Michael Ayers will fill in as interim police chief until a new chief is hired, according to Dowell.

She said the council and mayor have not yet set a salary range for the new chief.

We are still working on the budget for the police department,” Dowell said Wednesday. “They plan to meet for a called session Thursday evening to work on it.”

According to Canon mayor Ray Morgan, potential candidates should have a minimum of five years experience in law enforcement and be certified with the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training council in good standing.

The city council hopes to have a new chief in place by the first of the year.  Interested candidates may pick up an application at Canon City Hall, on SR17 in downtown Canon or  mail a resume to: City of Canon, 5071 SR17, Canon, GA 30520.

The deadline to apply is October 31st.
