HC Jr. Livestock team places second in area competition

Anna Smith, agricultural educator and Future Farmers of America (FFA) advisor for Hart County College and Career Academy, has announced the high school FFA Junior Livestock Judging Team placed second at the Area II Career Development Event (CDE) competition last week.

The Hart County team competed against 26 knowledgeable fellow junior teams. They will now advance on to the Georgia State Livestock Evaluation CDE, which will be held at UGA in March.

Team members include Lanie Brown, Larson Craft, Jordan Teel, and Dianna Nolan.

The Livestock Evaluation CDE is designed to develop the ability to select and market livestock which will satisfy consumer demands and provide increased economic returns to producers. Students evaluate six classes of beef cattle, market hogs, market goats, and market lambs. After evaluating, students prepare an oral set of reasons to give to judges, as well as take a written exam on all the species in the show.

Understanding what makes a good market or breeding beef, sheep or swine is valuable knowledge for the decisions every livestock producer has to make. The CDE encourages students to communicate proficiently, interpret data and work as a team, all skills which translate into future career opportunities, according to officials with FFA.
